Osvaldo Ryohei Kato published one of the first Doctoral Theses at ZEF. His research on “Fire-free Land Preparation as an Alternative to Slash-and-burn Agriculture in the Bragantina Region, Eastern Amazon: Crop Performance and Nitrogen Dynamics” is still available online. Kato started working with Embrapa in Brazil and continued to work with ZEF, e.g. on one of the first ZEF-based projects, “Secondary Forests and Fallow Vegetation in the Agricultural Landscape of the Eastern Amazon Region, Brazil“, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
